Waqar has held the Chair in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at several UK universities and visiting chairs internationally in China, Portugal, Italy and USA. He is currently an Emeritus Professor of Nanotechnology at the University of Lincoln.

He has over three decades of experience in international leadership in research, academic strategy, and interdisciplinary innovation and brings a global perspective and a deep commitment to academic excellence, research impact, and inclusive education.

As a scholar of international standing in nanotechnology, surface engineering, and biomedical innovation, he has authored/coauthored over 600 peer-reviewed publications, 30 books and successfully supervised more than 100 PhD candidates—many of whom now lead research and innovation in academia, government, and industry worldwide. These achievements reflect not only a sustained record of academic excellence but also a passion for developing future leaders.

His leadership roles at institutions such as the University of Lincoln and the University of Central Lancashire have included strategic planning, research development, faculty mentoring, and enterprise engagement. As College Director of Research and Enterprise, he has led initiatives that enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, industrial partnerships, and impact case development for REF2021. Earlier, he served as the Founding Head of the Institute of Nanotechnology and Bioengineering, where he helped shape institutional research direction and contributed to the founding of a new medical school.

His approach to academic leadership is collaborative and strategic. He has extensive experience overseeing complex research portfolios exceeding £10 million in competitive funding, managing research infrastructure, and leading international consortia aligned with priorities such as clean energy, advanced materials, and public health. His advisory roles with bodies such as EPSRC, the British Council, and international innovation agencies have helped shape national and global strategies for technology translation, skills development, and research commercialisation.

Equally important is his commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. He has championed initiatives supporting early-career academics, inclusive hiring, and staff development, and led mentoring programmes that empower underrepresented groups in STEM. He firmly believes that diverse and supportive environments are foundational to academic innovation and excellence.

He was inspired by the Silva Method which he has used throughout his career to help with his personal success and those he has supported and mentored over many years. He has a wealth of experience and profound knowledge of personal development and has completed numerous courses in the area with well-known experts. He has studied personal and professional development under numerous teachers and coaches. Waqar has also led and delivered several dozen workshops and courses on professional and personal development in UK and internationally in countries including Qatar, Oman, Morocco, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, USA, Portugal, Italy and France. Waqar became a Silva Method instructor in 2020. He is keen to impart his wealth of knowledge and experience through his teaching of the Silva Method.
